Most people miss the point. Of course you can have nice things even if you're poor. Just not ridiculously overpriced status symbols. You don't have to get the cheapest 20$ phone, but there are many fine smartphones in a medium price segment. You shouldn't buy the most expensive phone you could possibly get when you don't have the money for basic necessities.

If you want a car, buy one. Not the cheap old one which breaks down every week. Get a new, nice one. But don't buy a ferrari and then complain about how you can't afford food.

If you want expensive status symbols more than food or warm clothes then you're just very bad at decision  making.

Don't be the product, buy the product!
